10 shot Sunday in Philly

Philadelphia surpassed 300 homicides after a man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in North Philadelphia.

Later in the day, four people were injured in a shooting in Northeast Philadelphia, and, early Monday morning, five were hospitalized when gunfire broke out following an argument at a crowded cookout.

Police were called at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday to the 3600 block of N. 19th Street in the Tioga section for a report of a shooting, and found 26-year-old Shaheed Edwards, who lived on the block, with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and neck.

Edwards was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he died just before 5 p.m., authorities said.

There have been 301 people killed in Philadelphia this year, a 33% increase compared to the same point in 2019. Year-end totals were below 300 in 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2013.

On Thursday, City Council will hold another gun violence hearing, its third over the past several weeks. At at pair of meetings in mid-August, some council members expressed frustration about the city’s perceived lack of urgency around tackling the problem.

A large party in North Philadelphia turned violent after a driver performing “peel outs” hit another vehicle, sparking an altercation, investigators said.

It happened at around 1 a.m. Monday on the 1500 block of W. Clearfield Street.

A 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest, and officers rushed him to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, authorities said.

A 28-year-old woman was hit once in the right calf, and a 31-year-old man was shot in the buttocks. In addition, a 20-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to her head, and a 19-year-old man was also grazed in the leg.

None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to police.

Detectives are investigating after a gunman opened fire on a group of people at around 9 p.m. Sunday behind an apartment building on the 5200 block of Oxford Avenue in the Northwood section of Northeast Philadelphia.

Officers found 21 spent shell casings in the parking lot and one window of an apartment was completely shot out, authorities said.

Police said a 24-year-old man was shot in the left thigh, and a 23-year-old man was struck in his left forearm. A 24-year-old man was also shot multiple times in the mouth and left shoulder, and a 26-year-old man was hit in the buttocks.

All four victims are in stable condition, authorities said.

Then, on Monday, a 16-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet just before 2:30 p.m. on the 4500 block of N. 17th Street in Logan, police said. He is being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries at Temple Hospital.

No arrests were reported in connection with any of the incidents.
