100 West Philly residents displaced in multi-alarm fire

A fire broke outearly Sunday morning in a West Philadelphia apartment building, forcing about 100 residents from their homes.

Just before 5a.m. Sunday, a three-alarm fire erupted on the top story of the four-floor Netherlands building on the 4300 block of Chestnut Street, NBC10 reported. The blaze tore through six units, leading to a partial collapse. Wires fell from above, and bricks were toppling off the back of the building.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel told NBC10 that, despite “very tough firefighting conditions” from heat and construction of the building, there were no serious injuries to residents or firefighters.

Thiel said his crewsplaced the fire under control about 6:15 a.m.

The Office of Emergency Managment and the Red Cross partnered to open a shelter nearby, at the 4200 block of Ludlow Street in the Cato School for all displaced residents, 6ABC reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
