15-year-old N.J. girl allegedly sets fire to family home with family inside

A 15-year-old Gloucester County girl has been charged with two counts of aggravated arson and six counts of attempted murder for allegedly setting fire early yesterday morning to her family home – with her family inside, according to a report from The Gloucester County Times.

Investigators believe the blaze began when the girl ignited gasoline on the second floor of the house. Members of the family were awoken shortly after 2 a.m. by smoke alarms and evacuated the residence. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, confining the damage to the home’s upper floor.

Six family members were injured, including the suspect. A juvenile injured her hip while jumping from the second floor to escape the flames and the mother’s husband and a 9-year-old child are being treated for foot and leg burns at Cooper University Hospital.

The suspect’s mother and her brother, who rescued the majority of the family members, suffered the most severe injuries. They are hospitalized with internal burns at the Crozer Burn Center. A six-year-old inside the home was not hurt.

The 15-year-old girl who allegedly started the blaze was treated for burns to her feet before being transferred to the Camden County Juvenile Detention center. She will appear in family court tomorrow for a detention hearing.
