2 children injured in weekend shootings

Two children and a pregnant woman were injured in separate shootings over the weekend, another violent stretch in what has been a particularly violent summer in Philadelphia.

An 11-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to the back when gunfire erupted just after 7:45 p.m. Sunday on the 1500 block of S. Napa Street in Grays Ferry, police said.

Investigators said a gunman who was wearing a shirt over his head opened fire, hitting the boy as well as a 31-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman.

The man was shot six times and transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he is being treated for serious injuries. Police are hoping to speak to him to get more information about the shooting when his condition improves.

Authorities said the woman was in stable condition with a gunshot wound to her right foot.

On Saturday night, an 11-year-old boy was shot in the head and left wrist just before 10 p.m. on the 6000 block of A Street in Olney, police said. Officers rushed him to the hospital, where he was in critical condition.

The shootings came after a 6-year-old girl was shot in the back last week in West Philadelphia and 7-year-old Zamar Jones died after being struck by gunfire while playing on the front porch of his house.

Three suspects have been charged in connection with the shootout that killed Zamar, while the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 is offering a $10,000 reward for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the person who shot the 6-year-old.

Zamar’s death sparked outrage, prompting City Council to call for emergency hearings to discuss gun violence. Those virtual meetings are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

A 29-year-old man was fighting for his life at the hospital Monday afternoon after being shot in the chest at 1:30 p.m. on 1100 block of S. Peach Street in Kingsessing. Police said he is in critical condition at Penn Presbyterian.

A pregnant woman was one of six people, including four teenagers, hospitalized following a shooting at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night on the 1100 block of N. 38th Street in West Philadelphia.

The 24-year-old woman was hit in the right thigh and taken to the hospital in stable condition. Police said her unborn child was not injured.

An 18-year-old woman, 17-year-old boy and two 18-year-old men were also shot during the incident, as well as a 59-year-old woman. Nobody suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Officers responding to the 100 block of E. Sharpnack Street just before 7 p.m. Sunday found 25-year-old Shaquan Gleaves with gunshot wounds to his back and left leg. Gleaves, of Germantown, died a short time later at the hospital, police said.

In Kingsessing, authorities found a 37-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds and a possible stab wound just after 11 p.m. Sunday on the first floor of a house on the 1600 block of S. Ithan Street. He was laying face down on a bed, investigators said.

The victim was transported to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, according to police.

At around the same time, in an unrelated incident, a 26-year-old woman was stabbed four times on the 5500 block of Cherry Street in West Philadelphia. Her injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.

Early Sunday morning, a 33-year-old man called 911 after being shot in Center City. He told investigators he was leaving his Airbnb rental in the area of 10th and Arch streets when he was shot in the left shin.

Police said the victim is in stable condition.

No arrests were reported in connection with any of the incidents, authorities said.
