2 killed, 7 wounded in weekend shootings

Two people died and seven others were hospitalized in the aftermath of separate shootings Saturday and Sunday in Philadelphia.

Gunfire erupted at around 9 p.m. Saturday on 5th Street near Independence Hall in Old City, leaving a 29-year-old man with two gunshot wounds to his torso, authorities said. He succumbed to his injuries a short time later at Jefferson University Hospital.

A second man drove himself to Pennsylvania Hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm, authorities said. Police did not provide his age or an update on his condition.

No arrests were reported, and police did not comment on a motive, though Mayor Jim Kenney referred to the shooting as a “road-rage incident” in a post Sunday afternoon on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Unfortunately, our country’s gun problem means disputes can turn deadly, needlessly cutting young lives short,” Kenney added.

Earlier, at around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, three people were struck when shots were fired on the 700 block of E. Madison Street in Kensington, according to authorities.

A 39-year-old man was shot twice in his hip, twice in his thigh and once in his side, investigators said. He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Officers took two other victims, both men, to the hospital, and they were listed in critical condition, police said. Authorities did not provide the men’s ages.

No one was arrested in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

On Sunday, just after 1:15 p.m., someone shot a 47-year-old man in both of his legs on the 300 block of E. Ruscomb Street in Feltonville, according to police. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

In West Philadelphia, officers were called at around 3:45 a.m. Sunday to the 100 block of S. 60th Street, where they found a 36-year-old man with two gunshot wounds to his neck, police said. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition.

A 43-year-old woman was in critical condition after she was shot three times in her legs at around 2 a.m. Sunday inside a room at the Motel Six at 11580 Roosevelt Blvd. in Somerton, investigators said.

On Saturday morning, just after 9:15 a.m., a man in his late 30s or early 40s was shot once in his face and once in his arm in a parking lot on the 2300 block of Woodward Street in Bustleton, according to authorities.

The victim was later listed in critical condition at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, and police described the suspect as a young man in “Muslim garb” who fled the scene on foot into nearby woods.

Police reported no arrests in connection with the weekend’s gun violence.
