2 killed, 9 injured in weekend gunfire

In a year during which Philadelphia has experienced a significant decline in shootings and homicides, it was a particularly violent weekend.

Two men were killed and nine other people were injured in a series of incidents Saturday and Sunday, in addition to a mass shooting in Feltonville that left a man dead and four others hospitalized.

Shooting inside North Philly bar

Gunfire erupted at around 1 a.m. Sunday inside Henny’s Sports Bar, at 29th and Chalmers Avenue in North Philadelphia, police said.

A 48-year-old man who had been shot several times was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. The PPD has not publicly identified him.

Investigators said a 43-year-old man was shot in his chest and armpit area, and a 44-year-old man was struck in his knee and hand. Both were taken to Temple University Hospital and listed in stable condition.

Police said two guns were recovered at the scene, but that no arrests had been made, as of Sunday.

Weekend violence

On Saturday, just before 6:45 p.m., a man in his 20s was gunned down while sitting inside a car on the 600 block of N. 32nd Street in Mantua, according to police. Authorities have not released his name.

A bullet also struck a 39-year-old man in his right thigh, investigators said. He was being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries following the shooting. The PPD did not report any arrests.

Police said a 42-year-old man transported himself to Einstein Medical Center after he was shot in the shoulder at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday at Broad Street and Windrim Avenue in Logan. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

In Frankford, a 46-year-old woman was grazed in the face when at least one shot was fired at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday inside a residence on the 4700 block of Frankford Avenue, authorities said. She was hospitalized in stable condition.

Two people were struck when shots rang out at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the 500 block of W. Indiana Avenue in Fairhill, police said.

A 21-year-old woman was shot in her upper back, and a 28-year-old man was struck in his leg, according to authorities. The PPD said both were taken to Temple University Hospital and are expected to survive.

Detectives are also investigating a double shooting that happened at around 1:20 a.m. Saturday at a bar on the 6200 block of Bustleton Avenue in Oxford Circle.

Investigators said shots were fired inside and outside the establishment during an argument. A 23-year-old man was shot in his calf, and a 30-year-old woman was hit in her thigh, according to police. Both are expected to physically recover.

Police data shows that homicides are down 38% in Philadelphia compared to the same date last year, and the number of shooting victims has fallen about 37%.
