Teen girl, 67-year-old man killed in separate shootings early Monday

Two people were killed in separate shootings Monday morning in Philadelphia.

Just after 9 a.m., officers were called for a report of a person with a gun to an apartment on the 5900 block of Chancellor Street in West Philadelphia, according to authorities.

They found a 17-year-old girl inside with a gunshot wound to her head, and she was declared dead at the scene, police said. Authorities have not released her name or details about a possible motive in the shooting.

Through July 12, nine children under the age of 18 had been killed in shootings this year, down from 15 on the same date in 2023, according to data collected through the City Controller’s gun violence dashboard.

In Olney, a 67-year-old man died after he was shot during an altercation that occurred at around 12:30 a.m. Monday on the 500 block of W. Ruscomb Street, investigators said. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was shot in his cheek and left shoulder, according to police.

A 53-year-old man was hospitalized in stable condition with a stab wound to his chest, authorities said. The PPD said he is being held as a prisoner, and he is expected to face charges.

Since the start of 2024, 139 people have been murdered in Philadelphia, a decrease of 40% compared to the same point last year, according to police statistics.
