Easter Sunday is right around the corner, and one of the most “Philly” ways to celebrate the occasion is with the annual Easter Promenade on South Street.
Currently in its 92nd year and taking place on Sunday, April 20, the procession will begin at 12:30 p.m. (rain or shine) and will lead to the fan-favorite costume contest in Headhouse Square Plaza.
The annual event originated in Rittenhouse Square, but was moved to South Street in the 1980s. And with that move came some of the new(ish) traditions, including the addition of live performances, Mr. and Mrs. Cotton Tail, and the Best Dressed Pet category.
Those who want to join in on the fun can meet at 5th and South streets for the kickoff and work their way down to 2nd and Lombard alongside the Master of Ceremonies (Henri David), the Easter Bunny, Philadelphia Union‘s mascot Phang, and other “furry friends.” Free bunny ears will also be available to those who participate.

MC Drew Anderson (from Fox29) will lead “a star-studded panel of judges” for this year’s Best Dressed Contest, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. As a release notes, fashion enthusiasts of all ages and genders are invited to celebrate the day by showing off their most extravagant holiday-themed costumes. Categories will be TBD, and candy will be available for all Best Dressed contestants.
Locals are invited to explore area-wide businesses both on South Street and in Headhouse Square for all of your pre and post-promenade and fashion contest needs, including different brunch, lunch and even early dinner options.
The start of the promenade is accessible via driving, cycling, public transit, and walking. For more information on all things happening on and around South Street this year, follow the South Street Headhouse District on social media (@southstreetphilly) or online at SouthStreet.com.
