$210K raised for Mount Carmel Cemetery damages, reward

A combined $210,000 has been raised since Sunday toward repairing the Frankford Mount Carmel Cemetery and as reward money to help catch the vandals who desecrated at least 100 headstones in the Jewish burial ground.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, which organized a rally, Stand Against Hate, Thursday afternoon, has received $120,000 toward the cost of restoration and repairs. A separate GoFundMe page has raised more than $21,000 as of Thursday morning, which will be donated to the federation.

According to the Philadelphia Police Department, a reward totaling $69,000 has been raised by a variety of sources, including the Anti-Defamation League, the Office of Mayor Jim Kenney, City Councilman Alan Domb and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 5. The amount will be given to anyone with information leading to an arrest and conviction in the crime.

Between 100 and 150 headstones were toppled at the burial ground sometime on Saturday night, just a day before dozens of Jewish community centers along the East Coast received bomb threats, including 11 in Pennsylvania.
