4 killed in violence across Philadelphia

Four people were killed in violence across the city Monday night and early Tuesday, including a 16-year-old boy who was caught in a hail of gunfire in North Philadelphia.

Authorities said the teenager, identified as Shawn Grant, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at around 11:30 p.m. Monday on the 2800 block of W. Diamond Street. He died about 15 minutes later at Temple University Hospital.

Detectives reportedly recovered 63 spent shell casings from the scene. Police did not make any immediate arrests.

At least three people were taken into custody and questioned after a shootout in South Philadelphia left two men dead early Tuesday.

Officers heard gunfire at around 3:15 a.m. coming from the area of 8th and Wolf streets and found a 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, both of whom had been shot in the chest.

Medics pronounced the younger man dead at the scene, while the other victim succumbed to his injuries a short time later at Jefferson University Hospital, according to authorities.

Investigators said they found evidence indicating 35 shots had been fired, and handguns were found near the bodies of both victims.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told 6abc that responding officers saw a vehicle leaving the scene. They stopped the car at 3rd Street and Oregon Avenue and found two guns, he added.

Small said the three men who were inside the car were being treated as “persons of interest.”

In Kensington, a 69-year-old man was stabbed to death at around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday on the 2400 block of Kensington Avenue, police said. No arrests have been reported in the case.

On Monday, at around 11:45 p.m., an 18-year-old man showed up to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his right ankle. Authorities said the shooting occurred on the 100 block of N. 52nd Street in West Philadelphia.

Police said someone shot a 21-year-old man in the hand just after 6 p.m. Monday on the 2900 block of Frankford Avenue in Kensington. He was hospitalized in stable condition.

Minutes earlier, in an unrelated incident, three men were struck when gunfire erupted on the 5000 block of N. Franklin Street in Olney, investigators said.
A 37-year-old man who had been shot four times was taken to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition.

Authorities said the other two men, ages 22 and 19, each sustained three gunshot wounds, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Earlier in the day, a 46-year-old man who was being robbed was shot while attempting to fight back, according to investigators.

Detectives released video of the incident, which occurred just after 1:45 p.m. Monday at Cheltenham Avenue and Erdrick Street in Wissinoming, as they continue to search for the two gunmen.

One of the suspects tried to rob the man, but the victim wrestled away his handgun, police said. The second gunman jumped out of a SUV, exchanging gunfire with the victim.

The 46-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his buttocks and ankle, and he is expected to survive.

Investigators believe one of the suspects was struck by gunfire. They fled in a dark-colored SUV.
