5 dead in bloody Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend in Philadelphia was marked by a series of violent incidents, including shootings, stabbings and car crashes that left at least five people dead and several critically injured since Friday afternoon.

Among those injured includes the 19-year-old son of a Philadelphia police officer, who is in critical condition after an argument escalated to a shooting inside their Northeast Philly home around 6:30 p.m. Monday. The father, who was off-duty at the time,fired his personal weapon at least twiceduring the fight, striking the teen in the torso, NBC10 reported.

According to police, the unidentified officer was already on desk duty to recover from an injury, and will remain there while the incident is under investigation.

LaterMonday, a man diedafter being shot in the back of the head in Mt. Airy around 9:30 p.m., CBS Philly reported. Police found the 29-year-old man unconscious in the basement of a home on the 8300 block of Williams Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead around 11 p.m. at the hospital.

Those shootings came after two overnight incidents that left another two people dead. Police are investigating a 30-year-old man’s death after an apparent robbery and stabbing. Around 1:25 a.m. Monday, police found the victim lying unresponsive on the sidewalk near the intersection of Belmont and Westminster avenues in Mill Creek. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to NBC10.

About an hour prior, a woman was killed and a man was critically injured after a gunman opened fire. Around 12:30 a.m., on Chadwick Street near Susquehanna Avenue, a woman, 26, was shot in the back, and a man, 25, suffered a gunshot wound to his head.

Both were transported to Temple University Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting, and the man remains in critical condition, CBS Philly reported. Police found eight spentshell casings on the block, but have very few leads and are seeking the public’s assistance.

Two more people were killed Sunday in separate incidents in the city. Around 8:30 p.m. on the 800 block of LoudenStreet in the city’s Logan neighborhood, neighbors reported hearing a loud boom, 6ABC reported. A male suspect had hit a woman in her 30s with a vehicle, and had repeatedly run her over with the 2012 Nissan Maxima, thenbeat her over the head with a shovel.

The woman was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 9:45 p.m. The suspect is now behind bars.

Early Sunday, a man was found with gunshot wounds under the Market-Frankford El in Kensington around 1 a.m., the The Associated Press reported. The man was taken to Temple University Hospital, and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Elsewhere in the region, car accidents, shootings and a man who shoved a woman through a window after she refused to have sex with him added to the weekend mayhem.

– Severalbicyclists were injured Saturday after a car struck the group of 11 heading southbound on Route 54 in Atlantic County. Four bicyclists were hurt, including one seriously, and were sent to Cooper Hospital, according to NBC10.

– Around 6:45 p.m. Monday, a K-9officer and a civilian were injured in a collisionat a Northeast Philly intersection. Both are listed in stable condition at Aria Torresdale hospital, and the K-9 was taken to Penn Vet for observation, FOX29 reported.

As of Sept. 5, there were 190 homicide victims in Philadelphia, a 6 percent increase from 2015, according to the PPD.
