5 killed, 11 wounded in weekend gunfire

Philadelphia witnessed yet another violent weekend in which at least five people were killed and 11 others were injured in shootings citywide on Saturday and Sunday.

A total of 515 people have been killed in the city in 2021, more than any other year for which data is available.

Law enforcement officials said two men were killed and another was hospitalized after gunfire erupted just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday on the 3200 block of N. Front Street in North Philadelphia.

A 22-year-old man was shot twice in the face and twice in the chest, and another victim, also a 22-year-old man, was shot twice in the chest and once in the back, authorities said. Both died a short time later at Temple University Hospital.

Investigators said a 21-year-old man was also shot in the face, stomach and back. He is expected to survive.

On Saturday night, just after 7:30 p.m., a 21-year-old man was shot in the head and several times throughout his body on the 800 block of E. Westmoreland Street in Kensington, police said. He succumbed to his injuries about 10 minutes later at Temple University Hospital.

A man and a woman died after shots were fired at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday outside on the 2900 block of N. Orkney Street in the Fairhill section of North Philadelphia, according to authorities.

The male victim, 33, was shot twice in the groin and once in the chest. A 43-year-old woman who had been shot in the chest was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not report any arrests in the immediate aftermath of the homicides.

Elsewhere, an 18-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the back and buttocks at around 11:15 a.m. Sunday on the 7900 block of Torresdale Avenue in Holmesburg, investigators said. He is expected to physically recover.

Earlier in the day, at around 5 a.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in the right index finger on the 9200 block of Frankford Avenue in the Torresdale section of Northeast Philadelphia, police said. He was listed in stable condition.

About 15 minutes earlier, across the city in West Philadelphia, someone shot a 28-year-old man in the right ankle on the 4800 block of Lancaster Avenue.

His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening, authorities said.

Police said a man was arrested and two guns were recovered after a 31-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday inside a property on the 4300 block of Van Kirk Street in Northeast Philadelphia’s Wissinoming neighborhood.

She is expected to physically recover.

Investigators said a 35-year-old woman showed up to Einstein Medical Center at around 1 a.m. Sunday with a gunshot wound to her stomach. She was in critical condition, and detectives were working Sunday to determine the location of the shooting.

Two men were hospitalized after shots rang out at around 7 p.m. Saturday on the 6200 block of Lansdowne Avenue in Overbrook, authorities said.

A 48-year-old man was shot twice in his left side and once in the arm, and the other victim, a 39-year-old man, was struck in the left calf. Both are expected to survive.

In Kensington, at around 9:45 a.m. Saturday, a 25-year-old man was shot twice in the leg and a 41-year-old man was struck in the left shoulder on the 2700 block of Emerald Street. Both were later in stable condition.

Early Saturday, at around 2:45 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the buttocks on the 5700 block of Hasbrook Avenue in the Crescentville section of Northeast Philadelphia. His injuries are not life-threatening.
