6 killed in separate shootings in Philadelphia

Gunfire left six people dead within a span of less than 24 hours Wednesday across Philadelphia.

In Kensington, SEPTA Transit Police officers rushed a 23-year-old man to Temple University Hospital after he was shot multiple times at around 9:30 p.m. on the 600 block of E. Lippincott Street, authorities said. He succumbed to his injuries just after 10 p.m.

A second victim, a 40-year-old man, later showed up to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital with a wound to his back, investigators said. He was treated and released from the medical center.

At around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, police found 46-year-old Delaware resident James Freeman shot to death in the driver’s seat of a vehicle on the 7400 block of Gilbert Street in East Mount Airy.

Earlier in the day, at 2:45 p.m., Daquan Tucker, 27, and Nafee Hardy-Childs, 29, were each shot several times on the 5000 block of Germantown Avenue in Germantown, authorities said. Both men later died at Einstein Medical Center.

And early Wednesday morning, a 20-year-old man was fatally shot on the 2500 block of Grant Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia and a 24-year-old man was gunned down on the 900 block of Locust Avenue in East Germantown.

Police on Thursday identified the East Germantown victim as Tyjon Johns, who lived in Crescentville.

No arrests were made in the immediate aftermath of any of the recent killings.

A total of 274 homicides have occurred in Philadelphia since the start of the year, which is down 4% compared to this time in 2021, when the city recorded its highest year-end mark.
