Ahead of the holiday season, Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey welcomed local families to his third annual Holiday Turkey Giveaway on Saturday, Nov. 23. Hosted by All-Star guard, his nonprofit, and with plenty of help from his family, friends, and volunteers, over 2,000 turkeys were provided, in addition to sides and others gifts.

The event took place at George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science in North Philadelphia. Families from all over Philly who attended met the genial guard and received bags of groceries and other goodies, including additional prizes from the Philadelphia 76ers. In addition to the Sixers, Campbell’s, Gerhard’s Appliances, Gaff Law Firm, and DTLR sponsored the event in part.

For Maxey, giving back is far more than a seasonal trend. Established in 2021, the Tyrese Maxey Foundation has held events serving the community throughout the years, including toy drives, back-to-school, and more. The nonprofit is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders through the foundation’s three Fs: faith, family, and finance.

During the event, the Sixers guard discussed where his passion for giving back to the community comes from.

“My grandmother who passed away, my dad’s mom, called her Mimi—she was big on it,” Maxey said. “She was always telling me, ‘You didn’t have anybody and around our neighborhood that gave back and did camps and did turkey, but you didn’t have anybody like that. So if you’re able to do that, if you’re able to make it, then that stuff should be on the forefront of your mind.'”

“And it is; I try to do it every single time; every single time you see me doing an event, I’m always trying to be there. It doesn’t matter what the circumstances are. I would have been here regardless if we had practice today. I would have went here and then came to practice. But, I’m very appreciative of everybody who helped me put on these types of events, and now the sponsors and all the people who show up.”

In the early days of his fifth season with the Sixers, Tyrese Maxey continues to make an impact for Philadelphia both on and off the court.
