‘A Feast for the Senses’: Details on the immersive food and music event

There’s some local talent coming together for a special evening next month or, a “A Feast for the Senses” as its officially titled.

Taking place Sunday, Sept. 29, Aron Magner, the frontman of SPAGA and the keyboardist for The Disco Biscuits, is teaming up with local chefs Randy Rucker (of River Twice and Little Water) and Eli Collins (of a.kitchen + bar) to offer an experience of “stellar food, music, and conversation.”

The event will feature four courses curated by the chefs, plus live performances from musicians for a multi-disciplinary experience where food and music intersect.

“I was always interested in exploring how food and music go hand in hand,” said Magner, who has helped host multiple ‘Taste in Music’ events over the years. “Many chefs have gained their own rock star status, and both chefs and musicians put forth a mutual, creative, improvisational process of their respective art forms that create sensory experiences for those participating.”

Magner continued: “Making beautiful music in a band is about collaboration, and that’s exactly what Chefs Rucker and Collins are doing with their menus and their passion within their artform. With each event we host, we are looking to collaborate on both the musical and culinary sides to create one incredible, memorable extrasensory event for all involved.”

When guests arrive they can indulge in a collection of crudités, local cheeses, pickles, and tapenades, plus a raw bar with some treats from the sea. Dinner itself will feature an array of dishes including lightly grilled tuna with late summer tomatoes, sea beans, tonnato, and golden ossetra caviar;  a salad of little gem lettuce and summer herbs with panisse croutons, summer squash, and a lime leaf dressing; and a chargrilled heritage chicken with sour onion salsa verde, succotash, and sea salt biscuits.

And to end things with some dessert, locals can indulge in a parfait of preserved stone fruit, buckwheat-miso cake, and sorghum. As a release notes, the menu is subject to change based on product availability, and a beverage pairing curated by the two chefs will accompany the meal as well. During dinner, Chef Eli Kulp (host of the Delicious City Philly and Chef Radio podcasts)  will join Magner, and Snacktime’s Sam Gellerstein unique conversation about food and music. Additionally, C-CAP Philadelphia is a nonprofit partner for the event.

Towards the end of the dinner experience, SPAGA, which also includes local jazz phenoms Jason Fraticelli on upright bass, and Matt Scarano on drums, will take the stage for a full set of music. ‘A Feast for the Senses’ also acts as a fundraiser for the Heritage Radio Network (HRN), and more specifically their experiential high-school internship programs, which are designed to help students become better storytellers.
