A food truck for sugar fiends

If you’re a Philly foodie who loves Instagram, chances are you already know about the popular food truck Sugar Philly, which serves up only desserts. What you may not know is the story behind the sweet stuff.

Back in 2010, it was launched by three friends from college who were hungry to jump into Philly’s blossoming food truck scene.

“We wanted to add something extra to the food truck scene and though it would be a great idea to bring desserts street side,” says Daniel Tang, pastry chef and co-owner of Sugar Philly. “Sometimes to get a good dessert you need to go to a fancy restaurant and have a whole meal.  But sometimes you just want to eat dessert first.”

In these uncertain times, eating your dessert first is most definitely a good idea. Sugar Philly has a number of decadent items on their menu including cheesecakes and creme brulee but the star of the summer is most definitely their French macaron ice cream sandwich. A thick center of housemade ice cream is lovingly placed inside a larger-than-life macaron and it tastes even better than it looks on Instagram.

“We are already known for our French macarons which people already loved, but summer time in Philly is hot and humid. It just made sense to start making ice cream,” Tang says. “People went crazy for them.”

Flavors include  crème brulee, s’mores, passionfruit burrata blueberry, mango jasmine, horchata black raspberry, hibiscus melon, raspberry, maple cranberry cinnamon toast crunch.

“We have a lot of unusual flavors but us that’s part of the fun.  You can’t get these flavors anywhere else besides from us,” he adds.

If you’d like to try one for yourself, be sure to hunt down the Sugar Philly truck at 38th Street (between Walnut St. and Sansom St.), Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Tang also reveals that there will be a storefront location soon.

“We are currently working on a storefront on Main Street in Manayunk, the opening date would be late summer or early fall — fingers crossed on that!”
