A More Confident Denver Barkey Took The Ice At Flyers Development Camp

The Flyers’ development camp showcased a lot of talent and while much of the focus was on the recent draft class, one prospect stood out from the class beforehand – Denver Barkey.

Denver Barkey shines at Flyers’ Development Camp

Barkey was drafted in the third round (95th overall) in the 2023 draft. The 19-year-old center had an incredible season with the OHL’s London Knights, playing in 64 games, putting up 35 goals and 67 assists for 102 points.

While at development camp, Barkey shared that he was most proud of his defensive work during his time with the London Knights this past season. As Barkey excelled offensively, the most significant difference in his play was that he could be more of a two-way player. It’s a testament to his work on making the Flyers’ roster sooner rather than later.

During the camp, his speed was on full display in various drills. Despite not being the largest player on the ice, he has clearly made significant strides in his physical conditioning, looking more like an NHL player. This marked improvement from last year’s camp was further highlighted when he skated alongside Philadelphia’s newest first-round draft pick, Jett Luchanko. The two centers were a sight to behold with their impressive skating skills.

A chemistry formed in London

The London Knights were the best team in the regular season with a 50-14-4 record, even though they couldn’t win the Memorial Cup in the postseason. Barkey played a massive role in the postseason, so a more confident version of Barkey graced the ice.

Oliver Bonk

Another London Knight at camp was Barkey’s teammate, defenseman Oliver Bonk. Barkey shared that he views Bonk as a brother, with Bonk going on to explain how close the two are and the amount of respect they both have for each other.

Watching the two skate also gave many glimpses of the Flyers’ future. While both of these players are at least a couple of years out, it shows that Danny Briere and Keith Jones’ plan is in full effect of this rebuild.
