Five people were shot in broad daylight over a period of about 90 minutes Tuesday afternoon in Philadelphia, including a man who was shot 18 times in North Philly, authorities said.
That shooting occurred just before 3 p.m. outside on the 2600 block of N. 23rd Street. Police said the man was rushed to Temple University Hospital with gunshot wounds to his upper arm, armpit, chest, neck, thigh, hip, upper back and buttocks.
He died a short time later, and authorities reported no arrests in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
A total of 177 people have been killed in Philadelphia since the start of 2021, an increase of nearly 40% from this time last year, when the city experienced a near-record number of homicides.
At around the same time, just after 3 p.m., a 30-year-old man was shot twice in the left leg near the corner of Jackson Street and Shelmire Avenue in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia.
Police said someone dropped him off at Nazareth Hospital and fled the area before officers arrived. His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.
Two people were hospitalized after shots were fired just before 1:45 p.m. Tuesday on the 300 block of N. Robinson Street in Overbrook, authorities said.
A 24-year-old man was shot four times in the leg and received a graze wound to his chest. Officers took him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.
Investigators said a woman, whose age was not immediately available, was also shot once in the foot. She is expected to recover.
Meanwhile, in West Philadelphia, a 22-year-old man was shot once in the left leg just before 1:45 p.m. on the 6000 block of Race Street. His injuries were not life-threatening, according to police.
On Monday night, just before midnight, a 36-year-old man arrived at Penn Presbyterian after being shot in the leg on the 400 block of N. Wanamaker Street, also in West Philadelphia. He was later listed in stable condition.
Authorities said a 31-year-old man was shot in the lower leg just after 11:15 p.m. on the 1300 block of Blavis Street in the Hunting Park neighborhood. He is expected to survive the shooting.
Police did not report arrests in connection with any of the shootings.
