Alleged Dunkin’ Donuts killer linked with other shootings

A man who investigators believe fatally shot a Dunkin’ Donuts manager Saturday may have also killed his mother in February and could be connected to a string of shootings in Delaware.

Keith Gibson, 39, was arrested Tuesday in Wilmington following a robbery at a Rite Aid, during which shots were fired but no one was injured, authorities said. He had a loaded gun, bulletproof vest and ammunition when taken into custody, according to Wilmington police.

Charges are expected to be filed against Gibson for the murder of 40-year-old Christine Lugo, who was opening up her store in Fairhill when a gunman forced her into the store, took money and shot her in the head.

Gibson had a .357 revolver when he was apprehended, Philadelphia Police Inspector Frank Vanore said, the same weapon used in Lugo’s killing.

After releasing surveillance video of the shooting, police were contacted by authorities in Elsmere, Delaware, who were investigating a homicide that occurred May 15 at a cellphone store, Vanore said.

A man matching Gibson’s description killed a 28-year-old woman who was working behind the counter, he added.

On Sunday morning, the day after Lugo’s death, detectives believe Gibson shot and killed a man on the street in Wilmington. Later that day, he allegedly shot another store clerk in Wilmington, who is in extremely critical condition, Vanore said.

Investigators are also looking at Gibson in connection with a January double homicide that occurred inside a North Philadelphia store.

His mother, Christine Gibson, was shot and killed in February inside her workplace, an East Falls rehabilitation center, and Gibson may now face charges in the case.

“At certain points in the investigation, her son’s name did come up,” Vanore said. “However, we were never able to link him to the murder at that time.”

During the investigation, police found out that Keith Gibson had been spotted in Philadelphia, a parole violation.

Vanore said Gibson was released last year after serving 12 years in a Delaware prison for his involvement in a 2008 robbery and homicide.

Sometime in February, officers arrested him and sent him back to Delaware for the probation offense, though he was later released, Vanore said.

Gibson is currently being held on $305,000 cash-only bail in Delaware after authorities in Wilmington charged him with robbery, weapons violations and other offenses relating to the Rite Aid robbery.
