Allstate releases annual safe driver report. Where does Philadelphia rank?

Philadelphia has ranked sixth-worst among the country’s 200 largest cities in the percentage of safe drivers, according to an annual report from Allstate Insurance Company.

The report, based on Allstate claims data, ranks the largest cities according to car collision frequency to determine who has the safest drivers. According to the report, the national average is one collision every 10 years. The average Philadelphia motorist is involved in an accident every 6.1 years, making them 64 percent more likely to get into an accident than the average driver.

Washington, D.C., has the cities worst drivers, according to the report, with the average driver in the nation’s capital getting into a collision once every 4.7 years.

The safest city? Sioux Falls, S.D., where drivers average a collision once every 13.8 years. It is the fifth year the city has held the top spot in the report’s eight-year history. As expected, the cities with the lowest rate of collisions were those with smaller populations.

Pennsylvania’s other big city, Pittsburgh, finished slightly better than Philadelphia, with a collision every 7.5 years for the average driver, making them 33 percent more likely to be involved in an accident than the average driver.

In a bit of good news, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that fatal car crashes are at the lowest level since 1949, but still average more than 32,000 every year.
