The final show for the season at the Bucks County Playhouse is set to open soon. ‘Anastasia: The Musical’ will hit the stage at the New Hope venue starting Nov. 22 (with shows running until Jan. 11) and this production comes from the Tony Award-winning creators of ‘Ragtime.’
“I love romantic musicals and I’ve been fascinated by the mystery of Anastasia since I was a child,” says Producing Director Alexander Fraser in a statement. “It’s thrilling to see how the creators of this Broadway musical have envisioned the story in a remarkable and fascinating way — one that has made the story timeless.”
The story of ‘Anastasia’ follows the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova, the youngest daughter of Nicholas II, the last tsar of Russia.
The official description of the show reads: When the Dowager Empress Maria Fyodorovna Romanov gives her beloved granddaughter Anastasia a music box, she has no idea it is the last time she will see her. As the musical begins, Russia is on the verge of revolution. Time jumps from 1907 to 1927, and Anastasia’s family, the imperial Romanovs, fall victim to the tide of history. Dmitry and Vlad, two opportunistic Russian con artists, attempt to find an impressionable girl to pass off as Anastasia. Their patience is rewarded when they find Anya, a young woman suffering from amnesia, who has spent the past years traveling across Russia.
For Buck’s rendition of this hit musical, Lyda Jade Harlan (“Scouts” Off-Broadway and “Maggie” at Goodspeed) will make her Bucks County Playhouse debut as Anya. Mason Reeves (National Tour of “Disney’s Frozen,” and BCP’s “Guys and Dolls”) will take on Dmitry, and Erik Lochtefeld (Broadway’s “King Kong”) will step into the role of Vlad.
‘Anastasia’ features a book by 4-time Tony winner, Terrence McNally, and a score by Tony Award-winners Stephen Flaherty (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics), the release finishes. The playhouse production features choreography by Al Blackstone and direction by Eric Rosen.
Tickets to ‘Anastasia: The Musical’ start at $39. A special Pay-What-You-Can Night will be held at the first preview on Friday, Nov. 22. Official opening night is Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
