Andy Reid delivers end-of-season speech

The most anticipated press conference of Andy Reid’s 13-year coaching tenure here lasted nearly an hour.

Reid confirmed two things: Juan Castillo is still the team’s defensive coordinator and Todd Bowles will take over as secondary coach.

But the real lesson in yesterday’s marathon session wasn’t in the details, it was in Reid’s demeanor. He wasn’t his usually crude self as he answered questions thoughtfully and honestly. Reid, who waited an entire month to wrap up the season, thanked the media for their patience.

“I wanted to make sure I stepped back and looked at it,” Reid said. “I wanted to make sure that I can still do the things that I think are the responsibilities of the head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles to win the Super Bowl.”

Reid also admitted that he did have talks with Steve Spagnuolo about coming on board as some type of assistant coach. No exact titles were offered or discussed.

“Juan was going to be there,” Reid said. “And as you know in this league titles are thrown all over the place and my feeling was with Spags that those two together I just thought could be dynamite.”

Perhaps the most telling point came when Reid touched on his relationship with Jeffrey Lurie. Earlier this month, the owner expressed his frustrations with the Eagles’ 8-8 record and called the four-game winning streak to close out the 2011 season “fool’s gold.” Reid agreed with that assessment 100 percent.

“He didn’t say anything in there that ruffled my feathers or anything else that I don’t completely agree with,” Reid said.
