‘Annie’ star Issie Swickle ‘learned from the best’

Issie Swickle is only 9 years old, and she’s already starring in a Tony Award-winning show. Swickle is the lead in the newest incarnation of “Annie,” currently on tour and making a Philly stop this week.

She’s a busy kid, but we managed to ask her a few questions about touring — and having to chop off her hair for Annie’s iconic look.

How did you first react when you found out you got the role of Annie?

I was shocked.

What do you like best about playing her?

It’s mostly really fun and hopeful.

Were you nervous playing a character that people already know so well?

No, because I learned from the best. I learned from the man who created Annie. I know that everything I do as Annie is correct because [“Annie”’s original lyricist and director] Martin Charnin taught me.

Were you upset having to cut your hair short for the role?

I really didn’t mind because it was for a good cause and the role of Annie. So I didn’t mind. I was upset at first but now I’m used to it. [Swickle donated the hair to Locks of Love.]

Are you a dog person? What’s it like performing with Sandy?

I am a very big dog person. I have three dogs at home so I’m used to dogs and I like it very much. It’s an amazing opportunity and I feel so cool and different working with the dog. I love it.

Which city on the tour has been your favorite so far? Which are you most looking forward to visiting?

My favorite city was Fort Lauderdale — because that’s where I live. And Las Vegas, because in Las Vegas it will be my birthday on opening night.
