There has been a lot of recent turnover in Philly sports. If you have a Jimmy Rollins, Michael Carter-Williams, LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin or Nick Foles jersey, you got hosed over the past few months. But if you are a true sports fan, it’s hard not to invest in your teams and sport their apparel.
Here’s Metro’s guess (because as Chip Kelly and Sam Hinkie have shown, anything is possible) for the best players to invest in by acquiring their jersey.
76ers:Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid
These two big men are the bedrock foundation for the future of the Sixers. And they’re probably the only two players you’ve ever heard of currently with the team. Each is still under the age of 21-years-old, each is a daunting seven-footer and each could man the Philly front court for years to come. Look for both to be double-double guys and, with talent in the back court, a competitive force in the Eastern Conference. Phillies:Chase Utley, Ken Giles
I could be wrong here, but I think it’s pretty clear Chase Utley is content to wind down his career here in Philly. He’s won a World Series title and spent 12 seasons in red pinstripes. There’s always a chance he’ll waive his no-trade clause and go back home to Southern California but he’s spoken out against in the past. Ken Giles is the air-apparent to Jonathan Papelbon to close games for the Phillies, and the flame-thrower is not heading anywhere anytime soon. Flyers:Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds, Jakub Voracek
These three, we can be pretty certain will be around for a long time. Each is in their mid 20s and on the right side of their prime. And each is an explosive offensive force for the Flyers. If only the defense could perform as well as these three forwards, the Flyers would be a mainstay in the playoffs. Hopefully the up-and-coming prospects on D, like Shayne Ghostisbehere and Samuel Morin will lift the team in the near future. Eagles:Connor Barwin, Kiko Alonso, Zach Ertz, Jordan Matthews
They may not be the most impressive names on the back of an Eagles jersey, but they are what we are left with. There is a lot in flux right now on the Birds’ roster, and even if new star running back DeMarco Murray has a good season in 2015 there’s no telling how long he’ll stay. Sam Bradford’s future is also not set in stone, he could get reinsured, or even be a secret trade chip. Barwin is a pass-rushing beast who just signed an extension, Alonso is the stud middle linebacker who could anchor the defense for years to come, and Ertz and Matthews are the remnants of the Eagles’ dominant offense from 2013 and 2014.
