Arrested made in Villanova professor’s murder

A 42-year-old Philadelphia man has been arrested and charged with the murder of retired Villanova professor Carol Ambruster, Philadelphia police said Friday night.

Jose Diaz, of the 100 block of West Hansberry Street, has also been charged with other related offenses for the murder of 69-year-old Ambruster who was found dead in her home on Dec. 9 with multiple stab wounds to her chest and neck.

A former Villanova colleague said Ambruster was “loved.”

Ambruster received a bachelor’s degree in physics from Northeastern University outside Boston in 1971 and a doctorate in astronomy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984.She taught at Villanova from 1987 until retiring in 2011.

She worked with colleagues at the University of Colorado and NASA in studying solar flares and radiation during her long career.
