Calling all creative kids!

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is offering a summer of fun beginning this weekend as Art Kids Summer returns, providing young artists with an opportunity to embrace their creative side in a fun and educational setting. Every Friday through Sunday, from July 4 through Aug. 24, the museum will have drop-in art making, kid-friendly tours, and much more from 10 a.m to 3 p.m.

This year’s theme for Art Kids Summer is Paper, Prints, and Play! The theme is inspired by prints created by contemporary artists like Helen Frankenthaler, Alex Katz, and Rashid Johnson in the museum’s new exhibition, Brand X Editions: Innovation in Screenprinting.

“Every kid is an art kid,” said Lindsey Bloom, Manager of Family Programs. “We’re excited to offer programs that engage kids and families through a variety of art-making activities. Whether you’re a regular visitor or new to the museum, Art Kids can be a part of your summer.”

There’s also fun for the whole family as the museum will feature monthly family festivals and family tours, providing something exciting for every family this summer.

Summer family festivals

This summer, families are welcome to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a pair of “Pay What You Wish Family Festivals,” featuring performances, art demonstrations, and art-making with local artists.

The first festival, Flower Power Sunday, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. It will feature printmaking with local artist Justine Kelley, still life sketching in the Great Stair Hall, and an interactive performance for the tiniest museum guests courtesy of Ninth Planet.

Then, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 3, families can enjoy “Dab, Dash, Glide.” Families will learn about mark-making while discovering the quirky tools, movement, and stories associated with the art. This festival will also feature a gallery texture challenge where families will do their best to to identify and sketch mystery objects purely by touch, and a performance from Philly hip-hop art-education group ILL DOOTS.

As always, visitors under the age of 18 are free to enjoy the excitement found in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
