If you think you’re missing out on all the fun by staying close to home this summer, fear not. There are plenty of events for everyone happening while the days are long. And does getting out of the house without reaching into your wallet seem good to be true? We handpicked some of the best free events happening in the second half of the season.

Screening Under the Stars: ‘Back to the Future’

Shakespeare in Clark Park: ‘The Winter’s Tale’

July 29-Aug. 2, 7 p.m.

Family drama, tales of distant lands, blossoming romance, a trickster and a bear…all of these are elements of any good entertainment, andalso a few of the things you’ll see in Shakespeare in Clark Park’s outdoor production of “The Winter’s Tale.” Bring a picnic blanket and snacks.

The Barnes

First Sunday of the month

Set aside Aug. 2 to peruse Dr. Barnes’ famous art collection in its beautiful home on the Parkway. Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month,but the catch is you can’t reserve tickets in advance: They go on sale at the museum at 9 a.m.and the galleries open at 10 a.m. Bring the kids for ArtSee activities in the afternoon.

Night Market: Lancaster Avenue

Aug. 6, 6-10 p.m.

The Food Trust’s rotating street food fests bring out Philly’s best food trucks and vendors. Next up, the festival returns to Lancaster Avenue in West Philly. It’s free to stroll along in the party atmosphere and listen to live music, but bring cash to buy treats from the trucks.

Summer Group Show

Through Aug. 9

This gallery is named not for the street that it’s on, but for the fact that it has 22 participating members. Normally each of those members has the opportunity to display their work individually, but the current exhibit is a group show with all the art juxtaposed in one room,includingpaintings and photographs by Phyllis Anderson, who incorporates text into her acrylic painting of lilacs.

Art Splash

Though Sept. 7

Kids under 12 get in free to the Art Museum’s family-friendly summer series, featuring hands-on workshops in the Splash Studio, gallery tours, art-making activities and festivals. This year’s themes are the alphabet and the natural world. Tied to both is an Art Splash exhibition inspired by the museum’s children’s book, “A is for Art Museum.” There’s also a new A is for Art Museum app designed to guidefamilies through 26 works of art.
