Baby rescued after tossed from burning home in Northeast Philly

Five adults and four children were injured in an overnight fire in Philadelphia that also displaced more than 20residents, according to reports.

A fire broke out around 4 a.m. Tuesdayin a mixed-use building onthe 4500 block of FrankfordAvenue in Northeast Philadelphia. The blaze, which spread to three floors in the building, trappedseveral people inside, including a baby, who was tossed into the arms of firefighters from the third floor.

The nine injured were in stable condition, and firefighters rescued another 12 residents from the flames, according to the American Red Cross Eastern Pennsylvania, which helped the displaced families.

Red Paw Relief was able to rescue several pets, but 6ABCreported that some died in the blaze. The rescue service tweeted later Tuesday morning that all19 pets affected by the firehad been accounted for.

SEPTA temporarily shut down service on the Market-Frankford Line until the blaze was brought under control, and used shuttle buses to transport riders from Erie-Torresdale to Frankford Transportation Center. Full service wasresumed by 5:15 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
