Baby’s death at day care center suspicious: Police

A 10-month-old baby’s suspicious death at a North Philadelphia day care center has led to a police investigation.

On Wednesday afternoon, police were called to Sister’s Childcare Center on Germantown Avenue after reports of an unresponsive baby girl, ABC stated. Witness Karen Starr was walking on the block when a woman exited the day care with what seemed to be a lifeless baby girl.

“I was just scared like, ‘What’s wrong with the baby?’ And the baby was just limping, just lying there. Her mouth was black. And she was giving the baby mouth to mouth, and I said, ‘Is the baby OK?’ And she said, ‘No, the baby’s not breathing.’ So I dialed 911,” Starr said to ABC.

Police said the child’s uncle arrived at the day care as the staff member was performing mouth-to-mouth CPR and took the baby, rushing her to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Philly.com reported.

Police have said that the death was suspicious, and the Special Victims Unit was working on the case, ABC added. Crime scene investigators combed the day care for any potential evidence.

In the last two years of state inspections, Sisters Childcare was found to be noncompliant in more than two dozen instances, Philly.com reported, listing several of the infractions, including peeling paint, understaffing and staff members without security clearances on file.

Police were interviewing staff at the center and relatives of the 10-month-old baby girl, according to ABC.
