Best bets for city summer camps

Believe it or not, things will defrost and summer will sneak up — and along with it comes bored little ones. Fortunately, Philly has plenty of ways to keep them busy and keep them learning while school’s out.

The Franklin Institute

We’ve got to admit that we’re a little jealous that the Franklin Institute’s Discovery Camp’s cut off is eighth grade. This camp capitalizes on the Franklin’s unique mix of laboratory and playground with hands-on science experiments, guest speakers, film screenings and outdoor play. Spring break and summer sessions are available.

The Clay Studio

Even the most artistic kiddos want to get messy sometimes. At the Clay Studio’s summer Clay Camp, children will learn some basic ceramic skills and advanced making-a-muddy-mess techniques. Sessions at the Old City studio run July through August, with both full- and half-day options available.

Philadelphia School of Circus Arts

Have an aspiring Spider-Man in your life? Let the School of Circus Arts channel that daredevil energy into everything from unicycling to trapeze arts at their popular camps.

Appel Farm Arts Camp

If you’re looking for a slightly more traditional s’mores-and-outdoors sleepaway camp, Appel Farm has been hosting overnight arts camps in rural South Jersey for more than 50 years. Activities include a mix of the arts (acting, sculpture) and being a kid in the summer (swimming, horseback riding).
