Big Bang’s: Neighbors complained of fights and vomit at Center City stab site

Police are investigating a stabbing inside a Center City bar that hospitalized four early this morning.

A fight broke out inside Big Bang’s Bar & Grill at 1433 Arch Street around 1:42 a.m. when an unknown black man pulled out a knife and stabbed four people, police said.

Three male patrons, aged 26, 23 and 24, were stabbed in the back and a security guard, 24, was stabbed in the hand, police said. All are stable at Hahnemann Hospital and at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

There is no word on what sparked the fight. The bar, alternately described by Yelp reviewers as “ghetto” and a gathering place for “blue collar workers from neighboring municipal buildings,” is currently closed as police investigate.

This is not the first time there have been complaints about the spot – neighbor messages on Everyblock complained of noise and crime associated with the location. “I was awaken [sic] by screaming and fighting going on outside of this trashy place… Not unusual. The two dozen police cars and vans that arrived on scene upped the ante. Enough is enough!! That place needs to be shut down. It is nothing but thugs, drugs and mayhem,” one reviewer wrote Feb. 5.

“Constant fighting and at least one pile of vomit on the sidewalk each morning. The patrons hang out under the eaves of Old Nelson and smoke pot and harrass people,” a user with the same name posted Aug. 25.

The name of the establishment also came up during an investigation of a hit-and-run that killed two prominent members of the Asian American community in 2010. The two men in the striking car were believed to have been at Big Bang’s before they t-boned a Toyota at 16th and Vine streets, then fled the scene in a third vehicle occupied by two other men, according to investigators. Police said at the time that the four men may have been drag racing.
