Boyfriend charged with stabbing grandmother, toddler

A woman and her 2-year-old grandson were being treated for serious wounds at area hospitals Tuesday after being stabbed in a West Philadelphia home, according to police.

The 43-year-old woman and the toddler were attacked Monday night at a residence on the 700 block of North Preston Street, investigators said. The attacker stabbed the woman in the shoulder and and boy in the head.

When officers arrived, they the woman outside the house with a knife blade protruding from her left shoulder, The Inquirer reported.

The woman was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital and the toddler was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Both were said to be in critical condition at the time.

Police captured a 26-year-old man in connection with the attack and charged him with assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, officials said. Police recovered a weapon believed to have been used in the attack.

The suspect, who police said was once the woman’s boyfriend, sustained cuts to his arms and hands while breaking through a window to escape capture.

The suspect’s identity hasn’t been disclosed by police.
