Breaking Down The Flyers’ 2024 Entry Level Draft Picks

The NHL 2024 Entry Level Draft is less than a month away. Right now, the Flyers have ten picks in their arsenal and with the possibility of trades, anything could change between now and the draft. It’s time to take a look into the War Chest and see how the Flyers ended up with the selections they currently have.

Sparking a new generation of Flyers hockey

Luckily, The Philadelphia Flyers have the #12 overall pick, which could result in selecting a top prospect. Philadelphia also has the Florida Panthers’ first-round pick, which would fall to #30 overall because the team is in the Stanley Cup Finals. The front office made out well after dealing former captain Claude Giroux, among some other players, to the Panthers in March 2022.

Deeper picks

Early in the second round, Philadelphia has the Columbus Blue Jackets’ #36 overall pick which was traded to them in exchange for defenseman Ivan Provorov. Philly also gets the 51st overall pick for not signing 19th overall draft pick in the 2018 entry-level daft Jay O’Brien, who now plays for the Toronto Marlies.

In the third round, the Flyers have the #77 overall pick and have no picks in the fourth. They do have multiple picks in the fifth however, starting with the #148 overall pick. This is one of those picks that showcase how great of a General Manager Danny Briere is with retaining some of Noah Hanifin’s salary. Hanafin was in a trade between the Calgary Flames and the Las Vegas Golden Knights, and Briere made a smart financial decision that netted his team this draft pick from the Golden Knights. The second fifth-round pick was the #150 overall pick from the LA Kings. Philadelphia traded Zach MacEwen to the Kings for Brendan Lemieux in March 2023.

Just like the fifth round, the team owns two picks in the sixth round. They own the #173 overall pick due to draft order and picked up the #177 overall selection from the St. Louis Blues. The Flyers traded Kevin Hayes to the Blues last summer and received the Blues’ sixth-round draft pick.

Finally, in round seven, due to draft order, the Flyers own pick #205. Although this crop of picks isn’t as strong as other teams, many solid defensemen could benefit the orange and the black in the first couple of rounds.
