The Eagles have found a way to replace the recently retired WR DeVante Parker. As per the team themselves, Philadelphia has signed WR John Ross. The former first-round pick had a tryout with the Eagles during mini-camp which has led to him finding a new home in Philadelphia.
Ross joins a talented group of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Parris Campbell, and Ainias Smith. While many have speculated the need to add a slot receiver, the Eagles have added speed on the outside once again. Ross will battle for the WR3 position in hopes of finally finding his footing in the NFL.
Ross was the ninth overall pick of the Cincinnati Bengals back in 2017 after he set the record at the combine for top speed in the 40-yard with a 4.22. He beat Chris Johnson’s record of 4.24 to gain the title of the fastest man in football. The speed never led to much else on the field as his production never matched the prestige first-round selection.
Ross has spent five seasons in the NFL with four of them being in Cincinnati and a lone year in New York with the Giants. His best season came back in 2019 where he accumulated 506 receiving yards on 28 receptions and three touchdowns. In 2018, he recorded 21 receptions for 210 receiving yards and a career-high 7 touchdowns.
It’ll be interesting to see how he fits in with the Eagles and if he makes the final 53-man roster. Speed in the NFL is great to have but it’s useless if you can’t make plays which the Eagles learned firsthand with Quez Watkins. As the Eagles continue to round out their roster, the battle at WR position will be one to keep an eye on with their latest addition.
