BREAKING: Eagles trade Torrey Smith for CB Daryl Worley

The Philadelphia Eagles have traded wide receiver Torrey Smith to the Carolina Panthers for cornerback Daryl Worley, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday afternoon.

It’s the second notable move made by the Eagles in the last three days after acquiring defensive end Michael Bennett from the Seattle Seahawks.

Smith, who was set to provide a $5 million cap hit next season, was not expected to last on the Super Bowl champions for much longer. It was either he was traded or cut.

Not only were the Eagles able to get something for Smith, but they were able to bolster their secondary with Worley, who is signed through 2019 and will make just $650K this year.

In just his second season in the league last year, the 23-year-old Philadelphia native who attended William Penn Charter School recorded a pair of interceptions with 63 total tackles, a sack and 10 passes defended.

Worley has shown plenty of upside in his first two years and is a steep price for the Panthers to pay, though the team is desperate for wide-receiving help for quarterback Cam Newton after trading away Kelvin Benjamin.

The Eagles pass defense ranked 17th in the NFL last season and are facing the possibility of losing Patrick Robinson to free agency. Worley provides depth as he could slot in alongside Sidney Jones should that happen.
