Later this month, Philadelphians will be able to indulge in a New York restaurant chain when it makes its way to the City of Brotherly Love. Brooklyn Dumpling Shop is opening its first location here, and it will begin service on South Street on Dec. 20.
Beginning in the East Village, the brand was created by entrepreneur and restauranteur Stratis Morfogen and since expanding, is said to be “rooted in each city’s culinary scene while drawing inspiration from its original shop in New York.” From the time the first branch opened, Brooklyn Dumpling Shop has moved across the country with locations in Austin, Dallas, and Hoboken, and plans to expand to Florida, Canada and now, Philadelphia.
As a release states, the restaurant takes a unique approach to creating and distributing dumplings— aka the shop utilizes a cutting-edge automat system (a waiter-less restaurant), that debuted in Philadelphia over a century ago. This style at Brooklyn Dumpling Shop distributes a variety of handcrafted dumplings at the touch of a button, providing a “seamless and easy dining experience.”
For Philly’s iteration of the brand, locals Alex Flack, Nick Sordoni, and Stephen Hudacek will be taking over operations as they were eager to join the local dining scene.
“We are beyond excited to bring Brooklyn Dumpling Shop’s signature specialty dumplings, bowls, burgers, and more to the people of Philadelphia. The Philly restaurant community is second to none. We are honored to be a part of it and can’t wait to share our unique take on dumplings and more with all of you. Go Birds,” said Nick Sordoni, owner of Brooklyn Dumpling Shop PHL in a statement.
South Street was an obvious choice for the owners, as they wanted to plant their product in a “welcoming atmosphere and community” the release continues and notes.
And what can you expect when you order up some treats at the new Brooklyn Dumpling Shop? At past locations, the brand has served up a variety of treats spanning traditional picks, specialty dumplings, mix and match options, pot sticker soup, bowls, signature bites, burgers and even dessert dumplings (think peanut butter and jelly, apple pie or even brownie bite-sized dumplings with added toppings like ice cream and marshmallow fluff.)
Flavors have spanned pastrami and swiss, chicken parmesan, bacon cheeseburger, Philly cheesesteak, mac and cheese, pork and cabbage, chicken teriyaki and edamame to name a few for the savory dumpling options. Ultimately, Brooklyn Dumpling Shop is where “culinary delight meets convenience in a tasty fusion of dumplings, bowls, and burgers.”
As the release states, South Street’s Brooklyn Dumpling Shop will be open Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. to customers looking for an afternoon snack or a late-night bite. The South Street opening is just the beginning for the popular dumpling chain here as well, and they look forward to expanding even further into Philadelphia and providing dumplings for everyone around the city.
