Bryant returns as conquering hero

Home is where the gym is.

Kobe Bryant was in town Thursday night to dedicate a new gymnasium bearing his name at Lower Merion High School.

Bryant, who graduated from the Main Line school in 1996 after leading it to a state basketball title, has donated $411,000 to the school district this year.

The largest donation in Lower Merion’s history will be used to fund “a series of inspirational, interactive and educational displays” at the newly completed $100 million high school.

“That’s obviously where playing in the NBA kind of became a realistic goal,” Bryant told ESPN. “I put a lot of work in, a lot of hours in that gym, with a lot of people that support me and still support me to this day.”

Bryant’s appearance will be used to raise money for the school district. Some 1,100 tickets — priced at $10 and $25 apiece — were purchased for the sold-out dedication ceremony.

Proceeds from the event benefited the Lower Merion Education Foundation.
