Well, after a successful postseason run, it was no surprise that the Philadelphia Phillies MVP Bryce Harper was headed for the operating room. The superstar played through a torn UCL in his right elbow all season, which factored into why he was the team’s designated hitter. Earlier in the month, it was made clear Harper was going to get surgery to repair the tear. Now we know how it went.
According to NBC Sports Net Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury,
Now to most, six months from being cut open to swinging a bat is an aggressive timeline at best. Pitchers can often take upward of a year to come back from this type of surgery. Harper was a trooper with batting last season, hitting .286/.364/.514. He had 28 doubles, 18 homers, 65 RBI in 99 games ALL WITH A TORN LIGAMENT.
And oh yeah, don’t forget that the 30-year-old fractured his thumb after a wild pitch and missed two months. After he came back, he hit seven doubles, six home runs, 13 RBI and 12 runs in the 17 playoff games as the boys made their World Series run.
For fans, there are no concerns needed. Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani had the same surgery back in 2018 and he was back in the DH spot by the spring of 2019.
Thankfully, the Phillies are likely going to be okay while he rehabs. They went 32-20 while he was out with his injured thumb. Granted they’re much better with him in the lineup but by the time May rolls around, he’ll be ready to get them back to their ways.
