Cardinal Justin Rigali, longtime head of the Philadelphia Archdiocese, is rumored to be resigning, according to a report in the Daily News today.
Sources tell the paper that the nationally-known Catholic dignitary is heading out this week, five months after a damning grand jury report released by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office uncovered evidence that sexual abuse allegations were covered up by the Archdiocese.
The first report of Rigali’s exit was by the National Catholic Reporter last Thursday, which said Pope Benedict XVI was going to accept his resignation.
Stay tuned for more details today and the rest of the week.
