The Phillies are reportedly hot and heavy — think Selena Gomez/Justin Bieber style — for Carlos Beltran. He certainly fits the bill.
After all, the Phils need a corner outfielder (check), a competent right-handed bat (check), a player they can rent and then discard (check) and someone with pop (check).
So the question becomes: What are you willing to give up to get Beltran?
Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. keeps insisting the team is financially strapped. (Remember, he also said there was no way they would trade for Roy Halladay, re-sign Cliff Lee and is well-known for lying about the severity of injuries).
But seriously, the Phils don’t have much on the farm. The Mets have reportedly inquired about Domonic Brown. Personally, he hasn’t impressed me much this season. Still, the kid is 23 and scouts continue to rave about his “tools.”
Would the Mets accept a package of say, Vance Worley and John Mayberry Jr.? How about Michael Martinez and Kyle Kendrick? Ryan Madson’s contract is up after this season … and the Mets just dealt their closer … would that make sense? (Probably not, unless they wanted to extend him).
Then, there’s the farm.
The Phils don’t have much, but here are three guys who could be packaged in a deal for Beltran:
1. Jonathan Singleton, 1B: Considered the best minor-league prospect the Phillies have. The 19-year-old is batting .278 with seven home runs at Single-A Lakewood. First baseman by trade, but can also play the outfield.
2. Jesse Biddle, LHP: Hard-throwing lefty struck out Bryce Harper twice in April. Local kid — Germantown Friends — and 2010 first-round pick has been so-so in Single-A. He’s 5-6 with a 3.10 ERA.
3. Jarred Cosart, RHP: Probably the second-best pitching prospect on the farm. But elbow questions have slowed him this season, after posting a very good 1.065 WHIP at Single-A in 2010.
