Carter-Williams wants Rookie of the Year

Sixers point guard Michael Carter-Williams has his sights set on being the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Lofty goals for promising rookie

When the Sixers traded All-Star Jrue Holiday and drafted Carter-Williams with the 11th overall pick, it was a sign that the team was moving in a new direction. Carter-Williams was thrilled to be selected by the Sixers, but he’s not taking anything for granted.

“You’re not given anything, especially in the NBA,” Carter-Williams said. “You have to earn everything. Hopefully, I’ll be in the starting lineup. To make that happen, it’s going to take hard work and preparation. There are no days off. You have to bring energy every day and I know that. I’m very excited about this opportunity to play for the Sixers.”

Carter-Williams helped guide the Orange to the Final Four last year before losing to Michigan in the national semifinals. Since the Sixers are in a rebuilding phase, patience is going to be required.

“I don’t like losing, none of us do,” he said. “We’re going to fight and scrap and claw every game for this franchise. I think we will surprise people. The main thing is to keep working, listen to the coaches and continue to improve as much as possible every day. I’m going into each day, each practice, each game with a positive outlook.”

The biggest difference between college and the pros the length of the season, an 82-game grind. It won’t be easy, but Carter-Williams promises to be ready.

“I love basketball, and I’m blessed to be in this situation,” he said. “I will ask questions, do whatever I have to in order to stay sharp. I’m in a great situation here because of the opportunity to play. That’s the way to learn and I’m super excited for this chance.”
