’Cats looking to cure championship pain

Playing for a national championship at any level isn’t an opportunity that comes along too often.

That’s why Villanova will do everything it can to seize this rare chance.

The Wildcats (13-1) will face Montana (14-0) for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) title Friday in Chattanooga, Tenn. Villanova eked out a 14-13 win over William & Mary in the semifinals, while Montana edged three-time national champ Appalachian State, 24-17.

“This whole season has been a blast,” said receiver Matt Szczur. “We’ve had a main goal of going all the way. And we’ve had fun along the way.”

Villanova wouldn’t be here without Szczur. The All-American has 1,969 all-purpose yards — on rushing, receiving and kickoff returns — with 13 touchdowns.

Szczur is the only player in the country in Division I or FCS to record rushing and receiving touchdowns, while returning a kickoff and passing for a score.

Statistics aside, there’s one goal remaining: To win the whole thing.

“We thought we had a great chance last year and it didn’t happen,” Szczur said, referring to last year’s loss in the quarterfinals. “We came back hungry in 2009. It’s been a lot of fun. Let’s hope it continues.”
