Chef Danny Teng heats up Spice 28

Since its opening last summer, Spice 28 has made a name for itself as a left-hand/right-hand duel of authentic and fusion Asian meals. Danny Teng is one of the two chefs creating the inspired dishes in Midtown Village.

There are two chefs working here — you and the chef known as “Mister Ma.” How does that influence the menu?

Chef Ma is great. He is excellent in cooking all levels of spicy dishes and an expert in Szechuan/Sichuan with the use of many varieties of Chinese spices. I am more an expert in Thai, traditional Chinese food and have been creating a new class of Asian-fusion style dishes.

Is there a famous duo that you can compare yourself to? Batman and Robin? Sonny and Cher?

Not exactly. Batman and Robin are good ones. They are all heroes, who help people. I love them. Chef Ma and I both work well together.

How long have you lived in Philly?

Not long. I lived and worked in New York City for a long time. I came to Philly a couple months prior to the opening of Spice 28. I love to live and work in Philly even though my family is still in New York. I love the environment and the peace here, as it was always very busy in New York.

Where do you bring visiting family and friends?

I always brought them to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.

How do you like working in Midtown Village?

I like that there are many different kind of restaurants next to Spice 28.

Where do you hang out after work?

El Vez, Sampan, Buddakan and others — to eat!

Where do you go on your day off?

I sometimes go back New York City to be with my family.
