The Philadelphia Police are investigating after a child-sized casket was found – with a bag of human organs inside – on a North Philadelphia sidewalk earlier this week.
According to police, on Monday, July 3, about 9:10 p.m., officers in the city’s 39th police district responded to the 3000 block of West Clearfield Street to find “a small white casket on the sidewalk across from the Mount Vernon Cemetery.”
Contacted Wednesday, a police representative said that the casket contained a bag of embalmed human internal organ tissue, though there were no skeletal remains in the casket.
The casket, police said, was taken to the city’s medical examiner’s office for further investigation. As of Wednesday morning, police had no further information on the identity of the individual who the organs may have belonged to.
