Cillian Murphy talks final season of ‘Peaky Blinders’

‘Peaky Blinders’ has become one of the most acclaimed series of the moment. Its protagonist, Cillian Murphy, who plays the charismatic Tommy Shelby, says goodbye to this family of gypsies from Birmingham with the last season that is now available on Netflix.

Throughout the previous installments, we have seen how the domain of the crime gang has expanded but also the falls they have suffered, while in the previous season they experienced historical moments, including Black Tuesday (October 29, 1929), a day when the Wall Street stock market crashed and affected their business. But Tommy Shelby’s story is finally coming to an end; at least initially, as several spin-offs and a feature film are already in the works.

Metro recently spoke with Murphy to learn more.

How has the series changed your life?

Well, a lot. But I’m very happy with ‘Peaky Blinders’ because the public loves it. It’s crazy. I never expected to be so successful with the series, it’s fascinating to see how the audience really likes the characters. I am humbled by the success of the series. 

What do you think is the secret of that success?

The idea was to try to break the mold. Good writing in a series is the most important thing. That is what I always try to find, a quality and original script. That’s something that ‘A Quiet Place’ and ‘Peaky Blinders’ have in common. I consider myself a very lucky actor because I am at a very important moment in my career. I think the reason people find these types of movies appealing is because of the way they stick to the skin. They are stories that keep us in suspense and force us to wonder how they react in the next scene.

Did you internalize Tomas Shelby?

I don’t think you need to find things in common between you and a character, in fact, it’s more interesting when it’s something completely different to you. I’m much more chilled as Tommy is relentless, he never eats; I don’t drink whiskey, he does; I like to sleep, he doesn’t; I don’t smoke and he does. 

Do you like to start with the look when creating a character? Tommy Shelby’s hair is iconic. 

It’s always a journey to find the physical appearance of the character. I know how to disappear inside each paper trying to make people not recognize me. I try to talk to the directors about the characters, about their history. Based on his words, I work with the costume designer and makeup department to make sure I understand the character’s vision so that his physique makes a big impact. I am fascinated by dis-appearing within my characters.

You have always denied fame. Are you getting used to it?

I have been working in this profession for many years and it is no longer new to me. Now the recognition comes from good characters and that makes me feel proud. But my private life is mine.

Is that your reason for not moving to Hollywood?

I am Irish. I live in Ireland because I’m from here and it doesn’t matter where you live to be an actor. I just like being in Ireland, it’s a quiet place, you know…
