City Council may soon regulate city bicycle lanes

Councilman Bill Greenlee introduced legislation today that would require city bike lanes to be authorized by ordinance. Under the law, new lanes would be subject to City Council approval, similar to other modifications to streets or traffic patterns.

“Right now, Council has no say in establishing bike lanes,” Greenlee said. “The administration can put them in as they see fit.”

“We’re not against bikes, bike lanes or bikers,” he said. “I do think, and I think other members of Council agree, that there are places that bike lanes are not appropriate.”

The legislation could go up for a vote as early as mid-May.
