City announces traffic detours, festival plans ahead of Philly 10K

The Philly 10K returns this Sunday, Aug. 24, marking its 12th year running through the heart of South Philadelphia. The race kicks off at 7:30 a.m. on the 800 block of South Street and wraps up on the 500 block. Here’s what participants and spectators should know.

Race activities, information

Participants can pick up their packets at the Diadora Kickoff Party, taking place at Cherry Street Pier, which features race merch, food, and beverages for purchase. Packet pickup is available on Friday, Aug. 22, between 4 and 8 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 23, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Philly 10K is a rain or shine event. If an extreme weather scenario affects The Philly 10K on race day, participants will be alerted as soon as possible. Traffic delays can be expected. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes, avoid areas along the race course, allow for extra driving time, and proceed with caution during race weekend.

Road closures

The following streets will close beginning at 1 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24 until approximately 2 p.m. for the post-race festival: 4th Street from South to Bainbridge streets; 5th Street from South to Monroe streets; East Passyunk Avenue from South to Monroe streets; and Bainbridge Street from S. 5th to S. 3rd streets.

South Street from 4th to 11th streets will be closed beginning at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24 and will host the start and finish areas of the race.

In addition, the following streets will be closed beginning at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24 and will reopen as the race concludes: 6th Street from South Street to Washington Ave.; Washington Ave. from 6th Street to Moyamensing Avenue; Moyamensing Ave. from Washington to Snyder avenues; Snyder Ave. from Moyamensing Ave. to 13th St.; 13th St. from Snyder Ave. to Dickinson St.; Dickinson St. from 13th Street to East Passyunk Ave.; East Passyunk Ave. from Dickinson St. to 9th St.; 9th St. from East Passyunk to Washington avenues; Washington Ave. from 9th to 13th streets; 13th St. from Washington Ave. to Locust St.; Locust St. from 13th to 12th streets; 12th St. from Locust to Christian streets; Christian St. from 12th s to 7th streets; and 7th Street from Christian to South streets.

Street closures will be implemented on a rolling basis and will be lifted as runners go by and roads are serviced, according to organizers. The Philly 10K Course Map is available at thephilly10k.com/race-course.

Public transportation

SEPTA Bus Routes 12, 23, 29, 40, 45, 47, 47M, 57, 64 and 79 will be detoured from their normal routes beginning at midnight on Sunday, Aug. 24 through approximately noon. Detours will be posted, and specific route changes are available online at septa.org.

 Public safety information

Throughout the event, the City will provide law enforcement support, traffic control, and emergency medical services.

For safety reasons, strollers, bikes and non-service animals are not permitted. Participants are encouraged to read the Special Event Safety Guide before you attend.
