Cleanup underway, more rain possible after flooding in Philly and South Jersey

Streets were flooded, homes and businesses were soaked, and some people even had to be rescued from their cars around the Philadelphia area due to heavy rains walloping the region.

In Delaware County, crowded streets were flooded and cars were washed away.

In South Jersey, entire neighborhoods were flooded and homes and cars were see sunken in feet of water, including in neighborhoods of Brick Township.

“The morning storms have caused extensive flooding throughout the township which has resulted in over 100 evacuations by Police, EMS and Fire Departments in the Green Briar I Community,” said Brick Township Police Department Chief James Riccio in a statement. “Citizens are asked to remain off of the roads and remain home as more severe storms are expected this afternoon and early evening.”

Brick Township had the highest reported rainfall – about 7.63 inches.

Parts of the King of Prussia mall were slightly flooded, while police and fellow citizens helped rescue people caught in the waters from the flood around the area, including in Upper Darby.

“One gentleman tied some bed sheets together and tied it off to a railing to help rescue those stranded on Marshall Road,” the Upper Darby Police Department said on Twitter. “Another gentleman rescued a baby from a vehicle but he quickly left so we could not get his name.”

One Upper Darby cop even was swept away by floodwaters at one point, suffering minor injuries, the National Weather Service said.

It’s unknown if more flooding is possible but continued rainstorms are in the forecast on Tuesday for the region.
