Council sets sights on gun loophole

Though the “Florida loophole” has been a source of contention in the governor’s race, City Council entered the fray Thursday when Councilman Darrell Clarke introduced legislation that would require anybody carrying a concealed weapon in Philadelphia to have a permit issued by Pennsylvania.

The loophole currently enables people to get a permit online from Florida through a “reciprocity agreement” between the states. Democrat candidate Dan Onorato has said he wants it closed; Republican candidate Tom Corbett doesn’t.

Clarke fully expects that the NRA will fight any legislation but “we’re prepared to fight that fight.” A public hearing will be scheduled.
