Several restaurants in the Philadelphia and New Jersey area announced on Tuesday that they had been struck by a credit card data breach spanning between 2014 and 2015, according to reports.
Landry’s, Inc. and Golden Nugget Hotels and Casinos said an investigation begun in early December after they were made aware of suspicious activity regarding credit cards that were used in some locations, according to ABC 6 Action News.
The companies said that the investigation showed that criminal attackers had installed a program on credit card processing devices, which was created to search for data from the magnetic strips on cards, ABC reported.

Different locations were hit at different dates and times during one or both of these periods: May 4, 2014 through March 15, 2015 and May 5, 2015 through Dec. 3, 2015. Some locations were also affected from March 16, 2015 through May 4, 2015.

The companies added that they recommend customers to remain vigilant of any possible fraud through reviewing credit card statements.
“Enhanced security measures, including end-to-end encryption, have been implemented to prevent a similar issue from occurring in the future, and we continue to support law enforcement’s investigation. We are also working closely with the payment card networks to identify potentially affected cards so that the card issuers can be made aware and initiate heightened monitoring of those accounts,” the companies said in a statement.
